SNAP-Ed Extension Agent, Family and Consumer Sciences

Kelly Sutherland is a FCS SNAP-Ed Extension Agent serving the localities of Northumberland, Lancaster, Westmoreland, Essex, Richmond County, Mathews, Middlesex, Gloucester, King and Queen and King William. She is housed in the Northumberland County Extension office. Her primary responsibility as a SNAP-Ed Extension Agent with Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Family Nutrition Program is to recruit, train, and manage volunteers in venues such as community organizations and schools, to deliver core nutrition curriculum to low income families and individuals.

Kelly earned her B.S. in Health Promotion from Lynchburg College, in Lynchburg, VA. After college, she gained experience interning at the National Institute for Fitness and Sports in Corporate Fitness Management in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is here where she shadowed a Dietitian leading Diabetes Education classes, led corporate fitness classes at Anthem and partnered with NIFS Personal Trainers to train college athletes for the upcoming season.

After her internship, Kelly worked as a Health Coach, Team Lead and Motivational Interviewing Specialist for Occupational Medical Consulting partnering with Titan America. Kelly’s primary responsibilities included initiating on-site Wellness Programs; meeting one on one with wellness participants to complete health risk assessments, collecting biometric data, coaching individuals using motivational interviewing skills to improve personal wellness goals, developing challenges and programs to support improved health and collaborating with community organizations to facilitate wellness program goals. Kelly also led the Health Coaching Team on the Titan America account by training and mentoring new employees.
